Hobbies, hobbies, hobbies… ADHD and hobbies…
At times it feels like keeping up with hobbies with my ADHD-riddled brain is extremely hard. Fairly impossible. And believe me, I tried.
I tried watercolour painting.
I tried painting by numbers.
I tried juggling. Tried hula hoop. Tried diabolo.
I tried reading books.
I tried knitting (in all fairness, I cheerfully bought supplies and kept them in my wardrobe, occasionally opening the door to pick up a blouse and feeling a profound sense of shame at their judging glare).
I tried collecting postcards.
I tried scrapbooking.
I tried language learning (German, Spanish, and somehow — nobody knows why — Japanese, which is random even for me).
And the list goes on and on and on and on. The moment I see something I get curious about, I decide to do it. Then, after the initial dopamine rush of a new purchase, I get into it — here comes another kick — and suddenly I’m completely disinterested after a few weeks. Sometimes days. Sometimes, well, hours.
And the wicked cycle continues.
But let’s not derail — let me share what I’m actually into these days. My latest obsessions are:
NEUROSCIENCE — this obsession is three weeks old, but I feel like I’m reading less and less every day. Mostly I read about interesting facts about the brain, how certain chemicals affect us, and neuroscience in branding — which is super fun so far.
MICROLEARNING — this is a fresh one, just started today. Basically, learning three random interesting facts a day from completely different areas — inspired by an Instagram ad, naturally. So far I’ve learned about the world’s shortest war, how memories can be influenced after the event, and that octopuses have three hearts and blue blood. Interesting and good so far.
If you’re curious how I do my learning in an ADHD-friendly way, I’ll create a separate post describing in detail what actually helps. So keep an eye on the blog!
And which hobbies do you currently have?
