Who is your favorite cartoon character?

I watched way too many cartoons as a child. Way too many. And believe me, I am not exaggerating. Probably shouldn’t have. Should have, perhaps, hung out with friends outside — but there were so many cartoons, and so little time to watch them all. So, who needed friends at that time? (hehe)

Most of all, though, I remember one in particular — “Life with Louie.” It was, weirdly enough, shown on Ukrainian television back in the 2000s, and I loved it so much. It was about a chubby little kid named Louie, living with his parents and siblings and constantly getting into funny situations. He looked, somehow, well beyond his age, and was cranky and grumpy and super funny, while also being very righteous — which I always admired.

Every character on the show had a certain charm. I especially loved the father character, a WWII veteran, as he reminded me of parents in Ukraine, with their old-school tough love.

I could especially relate to Louie’s line about school: “My elementary school was a chamber of horrors… Our playground was terrifying… It was a breeding ground for psychopaths…” Honestly, I can relate to that much more than I would have liked.

And this show always delivered the funniest jokes. The humor always felt like it was on a much more advanced level than any other children’s cartoon.

Of course, only now — having remembered this show — did I read a bit more about it. As it turns out, it’s loosely based on the life of Louie Anderson.  It grew out of his stand-up special “Mom! Louie’s Looking at Me Again!” and, apparently, he talked a lot about his family, And now, I need to find that special too.

You know, having talked so much about it, I might just have to rewatch it. And maybe I’ll watch it with my kid later too. It deserves more viewership than it got, I feel.
